Contention and Coincidence:the Difference and the Unifica-tion of Marx's and Weber's Social Science Methodology
There are differences and unification in the methodology of social sciences between Marx and Weber. The first difference lies in the monism represented by Marx and the Kantian pluralism represented by Weber;secondly, there is the difference between critical theory and rationality.Critical theory revolutionizes and transcends the object of criticism on the capitalist exploitation system, and rationality believes that the development of capitalism is rationality in the sense of purpose rather than value.Once again, there is a dif-ference between economic determinism and cultural determinism.Economic determinism emphasizes that the economic foundation de-termines the superstructure, and productivity determines the production relations. However, cultural determinism holds that the devel-opment of capitalism is also influenced by cultural factors.Marx believed that economic factors were important factors influencing class division, while Weber believed that wealth standards were another factor influencing class division.
