Syntactic Analyses of Chinese Relative Clause Composed of De-Phrase
Linguistic typology regards Mandarin Chinese as SVO language with Rel-N order.Nevertheless, some scholars have found that there may exist relative clauses composed of De-phrase with both Rel-N order and N-Rel order.Although adjunction analysis and raising analysis are regarded as the mainstream approach to relative clause in generative grammar, the former is ill-equipped to address right-adjunction and arbitrariness while the latter violates Subject Island Constraint.Under labeling theory, this study indicates that there only exist relative clauses composed of De-phrase with Rel-N order, and the ones with N-Rel order are actually S-P predicate sentences.
