The Face of the Big Self and the Face of the Small Self Affecting In-terpersonal Relationship Satisfaction:The Role of Face Exchange
To explore the relationship between the Big Self s face gaining, the Small Self s face gaining, and interpersonal relationship satisfaction,as well as the role of face exchange in this process,611 undergraduate students of different age groups were surveyed using the Big Self s face gaining scale, the Small Self s face gaining scale, the Interpersonal Relationship Comprehensive Diagnostic Scale, and the Face Exchange Questionnaire. The results showed as follows:a significant negative correlation between age and the competition for face among older individuals;a significant positive correlation between the competition for face and satisfaction with interpersonal relationships,as well as face exchange;a significant negative correlation between personal face gaining and interpersonal relationship satisfaction, and a significant positive correlation with face exchange;the act of enhancing face in face exchange partially mediates the relationship between the ego's desire for face and interpersonal satisfaction. From this,it can be seen that competing for face has a posi-tive impact on interpersonal satisfaction through face exchange.
