Mediating effect of work engagement on job alienation and career success of surgical nurses in grade-A tertiary hospitals in Sichuan Province
Objective To investigate the status quo of job alienation,work engagement and career success of surgical nurses in grade-A tertiary hospitals in Sichuan Province,and to explore the mediating effect of work engagement in the relationship between job alienation and career success.Methods A cross-sectional study design was adopted,a convenience sampling method was used to select 217 surgical nurses from 8 grade-A tertiary hospitals in Sichuan Province from January to March 2023.The data were collected using general information questionnaire,job alienation scale,career success scale and work engagement scale,and the data were analyzed.Results The scores of work engagement,job alienation and career success of surgical nurses in 8 grade-A tertiary hospitals in Sichuan province were(54.61±11.22),(49.23±10.73)and(33.74±7.66)points,respectively.There were statistically significant differences in work engagement scores of surgical nurses with different ages,average monthly income,educational level,professional title,contract type and whether they were specialized nurses(all P<0.05).There were significant differences in the job alienation scores of surgical nurses with different marital status,average monthly income,contract type,professional title and whether they were specialized nurses(all P<0.05).There were significant differences in the career success scores of surgical nurses with different marital status,professional title,educational level,contract type,average monthly income and whether they were specialized nurses(all P<0.05).The total score of career success and its dimensions among surgical nurses in grade-A tertiary hospitals were positively correlated with the total score of work engagement and its dimensions(all P<0.05),and negatively correlated with the total score of job alienation and its dimensions(all P<0.05).The total score of work engagement and its dimensions were negatively correlated with the total score of work alienation and its dimensions(all P<0.05).Work engagement partially mediates the relationship between job alienation and career success among surgical nurses in grade-A tertiary hospitals in Sichuan Province,with a mediation effect of-0.084,accounting for 14.76%of the total effect.Conclusion The career success level of surgical nurses in 8 grade-A tertiary hospitals in Sichuan Province needs to be further improved.Work engagement plays a partial mediating role between job alienation and career success.Increasing the level of work engagement of nurses can reduce their job alienation and promote their career success.
