Research Progress in the Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease with Yinyanghuo (淫羊藿) Based on the Theory of Shenzhugushengsui (肾主骨生髓)
Although Alzheimer's disease (AD) and osteoporosis (OP) have different clinical manifestations,they have similar causes according to the traditional Chinese medicine theory.AD is a common neurodegenerative disease and the most common type of dementia.OP is one of the risk factors promoting the occurrence of AD.The Huang Di Nei Jing records:"Shenzhugu (肾主骨),Shengsui (生髓),and Tongyunao (通于脑)." Therefore,there is a close relationship between marrow,bone,and brain.Developing therapeutic drugs based on this theory has be-come a research hotspot in recent years.Yinyanghuo (淫羊藿) is one of tonic Chinese medicines,and its metabolites icariin,icaritin,and icariside Ⅱ have been extensively studied.Studies have discovered a correlation between OP and AD.As a Shenyang (肾阳)-tonifying Chi-nese medicine,it is mainly used to treat not only OP but also AD.The available therapies can only delay the progression of AD and OP but not cure the diseases.This article reviews the treatment of AD and OP by Yinyanghuo and its active ingredients,laying a theoretical founda-tion for treating the two diseases by similar Shenyang-tonifying Chinese medicines.
