Research Progress of Traditional Chinese Medicine Regulating Microglial Polarization to Alleviate Depression
Depression is a common psychiatric disease that endangers the healthy life of human beings, but its pathophysio-logical mechanism is not clarified. It is believed that the neuroinflammation hypothesis is closely related to the pathophysiology of depression.Microglia(MG)are resident immune cells in the central nervous system. The hypothesis proposes that during the de-pression,the continuous stimulation excessively activates the M1 polarization phenotype, secretes pro-inflammatory cytokines, triggers pathological damage to the brain, and then aggravates the pathological development of depression. Therefore,it may be an effective intervention strategy to regulate MG polarization phenotype to improve depression in the brain. At present,anti-inflam-matory drugs can be used to improve patients'depression, but there are some limitations such as narrow applicability and obvious adverse reactions.Traditional Chinese medicine has the characteristics of multiple targets and pathways and its medicinal proper-ties are rich and complex. In recent years, more studies have found that traditional Chinese medicine plays a good role in anti-depression by repairing mitochondrial dysfunction, promoting brain-derived neurotrophic factors, regulating protein expressions and controlling neuroinflammatory reactions and other mechanisms. Therefore,by taking MG as a therapeutic target, the article summarized and explored the literature on traditional Chinese medicine to alleviate neuroinflammation and to improve depression, hoping to provide new treatment ideas for clinical treatment of depression.
