Research Progress on Mechanism of Ginsenosides against Spinal Cord Injury
Spinal cord injury(SCI)is a common traumatic disease of the central nervous system and a major cause of neuro-logical dysfunction and death. The pathological mechanisms involved in SCI are complex, including inflammation, oxidative stress, cell apoptosis, spinal cord ischemia and hypoxia.Ginsenoside is a triterpenoid saponin compound extracted from the roots of Renshen(Panax ginseng C.A.Mey.)in the araliaceae family.Because of its rich pharmacological properties,it has been widely used in the treatment of neurological diseases in recent years to prevent and alleviate secondary damage after primary SCI.It is found that it plays a neuroprotective role mainly by inhibiting neuroinflammatory reaction,anti-oxidative stress, inhibiting nerve cell apoptosis, alleviating spinal cord edema, ischemia and hypoxia, inhibiting glial scar formation and promoting nerve cell repair and regeneration. In this paper, the targets and molecular mechanisms of ginsenosides against SCI were reviewed in order to provide a basis for the development and clinical application of innovative drugs for ginsenosides in the treatment of SCI.
