Clinical Observation of Electroacupuncture Treating Patients with Skeletal Muscle Atrophy in Stable Stage of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Objective This study observed the efficacy and safety of electroacupuncture in the treatment of skeletal muscle atro-phy in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)in the stable phase and provided ideas for the treatment. Methods It was a randomized controlled trial. The study included 120 patients with COPD in stable stage 3 who were deficiency of lung, spleen and kidney in TCM syndrome differentiation. The patients were randomized into two groups and there were 60 pa-tients in each group. The control group received conventional western medicine treatment, and the treatment group received con-ventional western medicine treatment and electroacupuncture treatment, which needled once a day,5 days as a course of treat-ment,a total of 8 courses of treatment. The interval between each treatment course was 2 days. The changes of TCM clinical symptom scores,COPD Assessment Test(CAT)scores, skeletal muscle atrophy index, muscle strength,cross-sectional area of rectus femoris,Barthel index, blood routine, liver and kidney function before and after treatment were observed. Results After treatment,TCM symptom score and CAT score in the treatment group were reduced compared to those of the control group(P<0.05).The indexes of skeletal muscle atrophy,cross-sectional area of rectus femoris and muscle strength and Barthel index in the treatment group were increased compared to the control group(P<0.05).Before and after treatment, there was no statistical difference in safety indexes. Conclusion Electroacupuncture can improve the clinical symptoms, delay skeletal muscle atrophy and improve the quality of life of the stable COPD patients with skeletal muscle atrophy. It is safety and can be used in clinic.
