Acceptance and Critique of the Theory of Civilizational Patterns
The theory of civilizational patterns is an important historical paradigm that emerged in the 20th century, advocating for civilization or culture as the basic unit of historical research.Initially widely accepted by Western scholars, the theory of civilizational patterns has given rise to numerous schools of civilizational history, influencing regions such as Japan,South Korea, and the Middle East.Over the past century, the development of the theory of civilizational patterns in China has gone through three stages and has pro-foundly influenced historical research in the country. The theory of civilizational patterns has faced controversy in the academic commu-nity and has been criticized by Marxist historiography as a particular form of idealist historiography.Despite its limitations such as cul-tural pessimism and Eurocentrism, many ideas inherent in the theory of civilizational forms, such as affirming the diversity and integrity of civilizations, advocating for cultural innovation and consciousness, addressing real-world concerns, and maintaining a sense of civi-lizational peril, have left behind valuable intellectual heritage for the development of civilizations in the era of globalization. They hold significant value in promoting contemporary cultural exchanges and mutual learning.
