The re-examination of knowledge production activities with new technological phenomena as objects:a case study of discussions on the metaverse in the humanities and social sciences
The literature on the metaverse within the field of humanities and social sciences has experienced an explosive increase, followed by a sharp decline after the advent of ChatGPT.However, the proliferation in research has not enhanced societal understanding of the metaverse.New technological phenomena are often assimilated by existing disciplinary frameworks in their material state.Knowledge production activities of the humanities and social sciences are trapped in a stimulus-response logic, and limited to the prediction and assessment of the social impacts of technological changes on their respective research fields, while losing or deliberately neglecting the exploration of human transcendence and nobility within specific issues. Therefore,it is necessary to distinguish the qualitative differences between instrumental logic and mechanical logic in the knowledge production of the humanities and social sciences,so as to provide a clear subject consciousness and explicit theoretical premise for understanding scientific and technological phenomena.
