In the first year of Jingde in the Northern Song Dynasty,Empress Dowager Chengtian of Liao and Emperor Shengzong led a large army of 200,000 southward to attack Song.In the meantime,they ordered the surrendered general of Song,Wang Jizhong,to write a letter to Emperor Zhenzong of Song,expressing"willingness to repair the old friendship".After the failure of Liao army be-sieging Yingzhou,they bypassed Daming Prefecture and marched before the city of Chanzhou.Emperor Zhenzong of Song personally marched to Chanzhou and climbed to the gate tower of the northern city.The Song army all shouted"Long live,with a hundred times greater momentum".Xiao Taran,the commander of the Liao Nanjing Army(Lin)leading his army to attack the northern city of Chanzhou,was shot dead by the Song army's crossbow,causing a great setback in the morale of the Liao army.After multiple trips,the envoys of the Song and Liao Dynasties finally formed the"Chanyuan Alliance".Both sides agreed to become a"brotherly country";Bordered state armies,and defended their respective borders;The Song Dynasty bequeathed 200000 pieces of silk and 100000 taels of silver to the Liao Dynasty as"aid to the military".The Chanyuan Alliance ended the Song-Liao Wars of 25 years long and maintained nearly 120 years of peaceful and friendly exchanges.It played an important role in the social stability,economic development,cultural prosperity,and integration and development of the Chinese nation between the Song and Liao sides.It also had reference and enlighten-ing significance for the equality,unity,mutual assistance,and harmony of contemporary ethnic groups.
