The culture of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties and the study of Mencius mutually influenced and promoted each other,in-terweaving and interacting.During the Yuan and early Ming Dynasties,due to the establishment of the official status of Cheng Zhu Neo Confucianism,the study of Mencius could only be inherited and developed within the scope of Neo Confucianism.In the mid-Ming Dy-nasty,the political principles were abandoned or loosened and the commodity economy developed rapidly.People's values changed,and promoting individuality and extravagance became a new trend.The philosophy of emphasizing individual subjective initiative and advocating simple ways of practice such as enlightenment gradually gained social recognition.As an important intellectual resource of psychology,the study of Mencius achieved creative development,especially the theory of conscience was pushed to a new height.Due to the excessive emphasis on human instinctual desires,Yangming Neo Confucianism gradually became empty and turned towards the opposite of Neo Confucianism.In the late Ming Dynasty,practical learning emerged,opposing empty talk and advocating a return to the Confucian philosophy.The academic dispute between Neo Confucianism and Mind Philosophy also led scholars to return to the classics.Under the dual influence of the two,the study of Mencius gradually moved towards textual research.The study of Mencius during the Yuan and Ming Dynasties was an important period of transition from Song studies to Qing studies,laying the foundation for the develop-ment of Mencius studies in the Qing Dynasty.
