How Did Yan Zun Interpret Laozi with Laozi'Style?—Starting from the Expression,Thinking, and Intention of Laozi Zhigui
As an early interpretation of the Laozi, the goal of Yan Zun's Laozi Zhigui was not to analyze the literal meaning, but to grasp the core idea of the book Laozi, and based on this,it provided theoretical explanations for the relationships between heaven and earth, yin and yang, couples, father and son, rulers and subjects, and among all things.Compared to other annotated texts of Laozi, this book achieved a clever balance between interpreting specific details and maintaining a philosophical perspective. This particularly highlighted Yan Zun's interpretive approach of using Laozi's style to interpret Laozi.Specifically,on the textual level,Laozi Zhigui inherited the language expression, sentence structure, rhetoric, and other textual aspects of Laozi;on the thinking pattern,Laozi Zhigui followed the analogical and contrasting thinking mode of Laozi;on the semantic level, the interpretation of key concepts such as Dao,De,naturalness, and nonaction,in Laozi Zhigui strived to be consistent with the core intention of Laozi.Through the interpretive approach of using Laozi's style to interpret Laozi,Yan Zun not only completed the interpretation of Laozi, but also demonstrated his philosophical thinking on the laws of natural things and social operation.
