The Role of"The Five Classics"in the Construction of Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism
"The Four Books"playeed an important role in the construction of Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism philosophy. It has been widely accepted that"The Four Books"had taken over the role of"The Five Classics"in Chinese culture in early modern China due to Zhu Xi's effort.Nevertheless, this kind of dramatic"takeover"was neither the original intention of Zhu Xi,nor the fact of Zhu Xi's scholarship. It is necessary to differentiate Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism from his classics learning. In Zhu Xi's classics learning,he responded to other Confucian schools, intertwined Han-Tang classics learning and Northern-Song Neo-Confucianism,through his new interpretations on"The Five Classics";in his Neo-Confucianism,Yi Jing was a major source of Confucian classics for his philosophi-cal construction, therefore,"The Four Books"was not the sole cornerstone of his Neo-Confucianism.
