New Form of Political Participation:Global Trends and Influencing Factors of Boycott
In recent decades, the world has undergone a series of major transformations, promoting political consumerism to become an important form of political participation in China and globally.Based on a large sample database of 118 countries/regions from 1981 to 2020,this study develops an integrated analytical framework, covering socio-demographic,psychological variables and national characteristics,to discuss the global trends and influencing factors of boycott(one of the main forms of political consumerism). It is found that boycott is unevenly distributed across the globe, with fluctuating trends in general and varying trends in different countries/regions.Socio-demographic,psychological variables and national characteristics all have a significant effect on boycott, with psychological variables having the strongest explanatory power. The above findings reveal the political significance of boycott in political consumerism,as well as its generality and specificity as a form of political participation. This study contributes to the overall theoretical and methodological understanding of boycott in political consumerism and provides relevant research insights and future directions.
