The Digitalized Party:A Non-Typological Theoretical Framework
The digital turn of contemporary political life gives rise to the new political logic characterized by immediacy, interaction and algorithm, which indicates the digital emancipation of homo sociologicus toward homo digitalis. As a result, contemporary political parties are obligated to adapt to the requirements of the digital transformation both technically and ethically.Distinguished from with the hitherto developed static party typologies, the concept of the digitalized party emphasizes that the digital transformation of political parties follows a rather complicated dynamic process of hybridization.First, the technical hybridization, which is embedded into the instrumental context of algorithmization, platformization and social media interaction.Second, the strategic hybridization, which is confronted with the tension between the radical orientation of digital construction on the one hand and the more modest alternative of digital reform on the other.Third, the outcome hybridization, which represents the mixture of both the fulfillment of the expected goals and the unexpected risks of the intended adaptive reforms. As a non-typological framework of analysis, the notion of the digitalized party illuminates the survival mechanisms of political parties in the digital epoch. It advocates a future research agenda focused on developing typologies of the competitive digitalization. In addition,it suggests that the western-centered research mainstream of party politics is in urgent need of reflective paradigm transcendence.
