Political Identification:Conceptualization and Measurement
Compared to pollical support and political trust, the two concepts currently attracting the main attention of political attitude research, political identification represents a much more effective concept pointing to the psychological connection between the public, their political community, and the political authority. We first distinct political identification into an identity and an ideational dimension, and build a six-component typology of psychological constructs that make up political identification.Next,we develop,six-component typology of the objects that an individual might identify with at the level of political community and the political regime. We also compare political identification with related concepts, such as patriotism, political support, and legitimacy. Finally,we develop a survey questionnaire to measure political identification, and present the validity and reliability of the questionnaire with the result from a pilot study.
