The Changes in Phytolith Morphology in Culms of Dendrocalamus giganteus
Based on chemical component analysis and morphological observation, the silicon content and phytolith morphology were investigated in different parts of culms in Dendrocalamus giganteus at various age.The results showed that the silicon content increased with increasing culm age,and was higher in the outer zone than in the inner zone.In addition, the silicon content was higher in the top than in the bottom. There identified 10 types of phytolith in D.giganteus culms, and irregular silicon deposition was also observed. The number of phytoliths increased with increasing age.Round and dumb-bell shaped phytoliths occurred in young culms, while elongate and rectangular ones were found in old culms.Higher percentage of round phytoliths were found in inner zone, while that of rectangular and elongate phytoliths occurred in outer zone. The irregular silicon deposition was mainly seen in young bamboo culms.
