The Progress of Perioperative Therapy with Integrative Medicine in the Field of Cardiac Surgery

In the 1960s, a number of integrative Chinese and Western medicine (ICWM) surgeons (such as Prof. WU Xian-zhong) first started the application of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in acute abdominal surgery, and thus they became the pioneers of perioperative therapy with ICWM. Since then, they have accumulated abundant experience in this field. At the 1st National Conference of Perioperative Therapy with ICWM in November 1994, the academician WU Xian-zhong, et al believed that perioperative therapy with ICWM hold promise for the future. Decades later, along with the further development of ICWM, surgical programs have been developed in many TCM hospitals. The application of TCM in the perioperative stage has drawn great attention. Since 1998, we have been trying to develop ICWM studies in the field of cardiac surgery, mainly focusing on perioperative therapy in our hospital.
