The integrated traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine became an academic branch in medical sciences. As more and more medical doctors were involved in the Chinese version of integrative medicine, an academic organization, the Chinese Association of the Integration of Traditional and Western Medicine (now named the Chinese Association of the Integrative Medicine) was established in 1981 aiming to strengthen the academic exchanges in Chinese version of integrative medicine. The World Integrative Medicine Congress has been organized by the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine every five years: the 1 st was held in 1997, the 2nd in 2002 and the 3rd in 2007.

Exploration and Reflection on Perioperative Researches on Integrative Medicine

In 1999, Kehlet of Denmark put forward the concept of "Accelerated Rehabilitation Technique" and made related studies. It was at this time that new concepts such as "Damage Control Operations" and "Fast Track Surgery" was introduced in the conventional surgical practice, which prioritizes the survival rate and the quality of life of patients over the success rate of the operation.

Most benign cases are cholelithiasis-induced cholecystitis and choledochitis, while malignant ones mainly include gallbladder cancers, cholangiocarcinoma or carcinoma of the head of the pancreas.

The Progress of Perioperative Therapy with Integrative Medicine in the Field of Cardiac Surgery

Since then, they have accumulated abundant experience in this field. At the 1st National Conference of Perioperative Therapy with ICWM in November 1994, the academician WU Xian-zhong, et al believed that perioperative therapy with ICWM hold promise for the future. Decades later, along with the further development of ICWM, surgical programs have been developed in many TCM hospitals. The application of TCM in the perioperative stage has drawn great attention. Since 1998, we have been trying to develop ICWM studies in the field of cardiac surgery, mainly focusing on perioperative therapy in our hospital.

At present, surgeons fully recognize the importance of the POP and are enthusiastically immersing themselves actively into its research.

Effect of Modified Wuzi Yanzong Granule (加味五子衍宗颗粒) on Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment from Oxidative Damage Aspect

查看更多>>摘要:Objective: To observe the effects of modified Wuzi Yanzong Granule (加味五子衍宗颗粒, WYG) on memory function and the activity of serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, leukocyte mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletion rate and β-amyloid protein_(1-28) (Aβ_(1-28)) in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods: Thirty-six patients with MCI were selected based on the internationally recognized Petersen's criteria, and equally and randomly assigned to two groups. The treated group was treated with WYG and the control group was treated with placebo for 3 months. In addition, 20 healthy subjects were included in the study as the normal control group. Changes of memory function, SOD activity, MDA content, leukocyte mtDNA deletion rate and Aβ_(1-28) content were observed before and after treatment. Results: Compared with the normal control group, the memory quotient and SOD activity in patients with MCI decreased significantly (P<0.01), while MDA, Aβ_(1-28) levels and the leukocyte mtDNA deletion rate increased significantly (P<0.01). After treatment, levels of memory quotient and serum SOD activity increased while the serum MDA level, leukocyte mtDNA deletion rate and Aβ_(1-28) level decreased in the treated group compared with those before treatment (P<0.01, P<0.05). Meanwhile, leukocyte mtDNA deletion rate and Aβ_(1-28) content in the treated group were all lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: WYG could improve memory function in patients with MCI and the therapeutic mechanism is possibly related to the increased activity of anti-oxidase, the improved free radical metabolism and the alleviation of leukocyte mtDNA oxidation damage. WYG shows clinical significance in delaying the progression of MCI.

Effect of Jin-3-Needling Therapy on Plasma Corticosteroid, Adrenocorticotrophic Hormone and Platelet 5-HT Levels in Patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Methods: Eighty-six GAD patients with the diagnosis agreeing with the inclusion criteria were assigned, according to the sequence of visiting time, to three groups. The 29 patients in the Western medicine group were treated mainly with fluoxetine or paroxetine, Alprazolam might be given additionally in severe conditions if necessary; the 29 patients in the needling group received J3N therapy with Sishenzhen, Dingshenzhen, Neiguan (PC6), Shenmen (HT7) and Sanyinjiao (SP6) as the chief acupoints selected; and the 28 patients in the combined treatment group were treated with both drugs and needling in the same way as applied in the above two groups. The therapeutic course for all was 6 weeks. Conditions of patients were evaluated before and after treatment with CGI, and levels of CS, ACTH as well as 5-HT were measured by high performance liquid chromatography-electrochemistry. Results: By CGI scoring, the scores of severity index and the general index were not different significantly in the three groups, but the efficacy index proved to be the highest in the needling group, the second in the combined trentment group, and the lowest in the drug group. Plasma level of ACTH and platelet content of 5-HT were lowered in all the three groups after treatment, showing statistical significance (P < 0.05), but no significant change was found in CS level (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The therapeutic efficacy of J3N in treating GAD is equivalent to, but with the efficacy index significantly higher than, that of conventional treatment. Moreover, when combined with drugs, needling might effectively prevent the side effect of the routinely used Western drugs. The regulatory action of needling on platelet 5-HT and plasma ACTH is probably one of the acting pathways for J3N treatment on GAD.

A Clinical Study on Global TCM Therapy in Treating Senile Advanced Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

    CHENG Jian-huaLIU Wei-shengLI Zhi-mingWANG Zhi-guang...

查看更多>>摘要:Objective: To assess the clinical efficacy of global traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy in treating senile advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), with the aim of seeking a standardized, rational and economical way to treat advanced NSCLC in old patients. Methods: A retrospective analysis and comparison was carried out in 86 patients with senile advanced NSCLC, 44 treated by global TCM (TCM group) and 42 by chemotherapy (control group) through dynamical observation on related indexes including tumor size, quality of life and the survival time, as well as on the fee for medical service at various time points in the course of the treatment. Results: The changes of tumor size, score of clinical main symptoms and behavior condition (by ZPS scoring), as well as survival rates in the two groups at corresponding time points, were not different significantly (P > 0.05). The mean survival time in the TCM group was 13.20 ±1.52 months and that in the chemotherapy group was 13.45± 1.94 months, showing insignificant difference between them. However, the median survival time in the TCM group (12 months) was actually longer than that in the chemotherapy group (9 months, P < 0.05). The mean daily expense and the mean expense (RMB yuan) for each patient in the TCM group were significantly lower than that in the control group, which was 180.73 ± 93.21 vs 825.84 ± 329.63 for the mean daily expense and 34 077.21 ± 14 638.04 vs 58 516.59 ± 45 429.76 for the mean expense for each patient (both P < 0.01). Conclusion: Treatment of senile advanced NSCLC with TCM alone has its apparent superiority in stabilizing tumor focus, improving clinical symptoms, elevating quality of life and prolonging the survival time. TCM is also less expensive, making it a good alternative therapeutic approach for this specific group of people.
