A genetic modification that causes mice to overexpress a particular hormone prevents them from gaining weight and allows them to live longer than unmodified mice. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), a hormone produced mainly by the liver, has been shown to be beneficial for treating people and mice with type 2 diabetes and other conditions associated with obesity.
