Abstract

Abstract In recent years, the green synthesis of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) has gained enormous attention for imaging and therapeutic applications due to their lesser toxicity, biodegradability, and cost-effectiveness. The phytocompounds decorated MNPs have also shown promising results during cancer treatment as an alternative approach to chemotherapy. This study uses the Agave americana (Aa) plant’s leaf extract to synthesize Aa-ZnO NPs. The obtained NPs were physicochemically and biologically characterized. XRD results confirmed the crystalline structure of NPs. During the DLS experiment, the average hydrodynamic size and average zeta potential of NPs were calculated to be 538.61 ± 34.95 d.nm and − 12.03 ± 5.68 mV, respectively. FE-SEM and HR-TEM revealed the triangular shape of NPs. Next, Aa-ZnO NPs were found to be biocompatible and hemocompatible in nature when tested on mouse fibroblasts and 2% RBC suspension, respectively. In addition, Aa-ZnO NPs also exhibited potent anticancer activity against A549 and HeLa cells, inducing apoptosis in cancer cells. These findings show that Aa-ZnO NPs may be used as therapeutic agents during cancer treatment.Graphical Abstract
