Japan's'02 nickel metal imports likely to remain low - trade

Japan's 2002 nickel metal imports are likely to stay low, little changed from an estimated 24, 139 metric tons last year, in line with Japan's slowdown in manufacturing activity, according to forecasts by two major international trading companies in Tokyo. Nickel metal has the highest purity, and doesn't include ferro nickel. Imports in 2001 were down 50 percent from 57,859 tons in 2000 due to Japan's recession.Japan is the world's biggest nickel user. Weak demand in Japan and other countries pulled the London Metal Exchange benchmark nickel contract down to a 33- month low of dollar 4,290/ton in early November.
