On current reckoning, the outlook for gold does not appear to be positive as hedgers unwind positions and prospects of economic growth in major markets are not promising, according to Mr Paul Walker director of London-based Gold Fields Mineral Services Ltd (GFMS), an independent commodity research and consultancy company "This year, gold market will trade in the range of 270-290 dollars an ounce; it has a slight upside, but not much downside," he said adding that the average price of gold in 2002 would be around 282 dollars/oz.
