The entrapment of mold slag is one of the mostcommon sources of sub-surface defects, generally known aslaminations, in material rolled from continuously cast stainless steelslabs. The start-up and initial transient state of the casting operationwas physically modeled to study the effect of fluid flow propertiesand operational practices on the entrainment of mold slags duringcaster start-up.
