Western world zinc metal supplies exceeded demand by around 292,000 metric tons in 2001, according to preliminary estimates by the International Lead and Zinc Study Group. This included net imports from the former Eastern countries and releases fl-am the US Defence National Stockpile, ILZSG added. A 1 percent fall in global usage of refined zinc metal was heavily influenced by a decline of 13.5 percent in the U.S., while both global mine and metal output exceeded nine million tons for the first time after rises of 4.8 percent and 2 percent respectively, ILZSG said.
