China targets gold output of 180 MT '02 Vs 181.83 MT '01

China has trimmed its gold output target to 180 metric tons this year, from a record 181.83 tons in 2001, the State Economic and Trade Commission said. China's main regulatory agency urged local gold bureaus to actively crack down on illegal gold mines, upgrade smaller mines, as well as improve efficiency and reduce production costs in gold operations. The agency also urged further exploration for gold reserves, especially in the western part of China, and pressed for a reduction in mine accidents this year.
