Swiss metals and coal miner Xstrata PLC gave a strong hint that it is preparing to join the market consolidation being seen in the zinc sector. The company said it is "actively analyzing different investment opportunities, both in zinc mining and smelting, where its technological and operating expertise could be brought to bear." The company said these opportunities "could consolidate Xstrata as one of the key players in the zinc industry." The company's foray into zinc is relatively new: in 2001 Xstrata acquired the zinc operations of Asturiana de Zinc SA, with its assets located in northern Spain. The operations comprise the San Juan de Nieva zinc smelter and the Arnao zinc semis plant in Asturia, and the Reocin zinc mine and Hinojedo roasting plant in Cantabria.
