Russia's aluminium smelters produced 1.65 million metric tons of primary aluminium in January-June, up 1.5 percent on the year, a government official said. In 2001, Russian aluminium output rose 1.7 percent on the year to 3.299 million tons on the heel of a 3.2 percent rise during 2000. The official said the aluminium sector was maintaining a stable pace of growth, with 2002 output growth unlikely to exceed 2 percent. All smelters increased output during the period with the highest rise of 7.3 percent registered by Bogoslovsk, owned by Russia's second biggest aluminium producer Siberian-Ural Aluminium Co. Russia's aluminium industry remained export-orientated, as domestic consumption remained small. However, some increase in domestic consumption was registered last year, the official said. According to the State Customs Committee, Russia's aluminium exports exceeded 1.2 million tons in January-May, down 5.3 percent on the year.
