Glowing interests has been focused on the co-packaging optics technology in which a high-speed optical transceiver composed of Si photonics chips is integrated near the large scale integrated circuit (LSI) placed on the board to speed up the data center network over the past decade. So far, the method to couple the Si photonics chip on the board with the single-mode fiber in the board-rack-to-rack link has been a major technical issue. However, since a simple and low loss coupling technique was proposed a couple of years ago by applying a polymer optical waveguide as a coupling element, the application of polymer optical waveguides for co-packaging technology is attracting attention. In this paper, we present unique polymer optical waveguide coupler devices fabricated using the Mosquito method to apply for adiabatic coupling with Si photonics chips, three-dimensional fan-in/fan-out devices for multicore fibers, and MUX devices for mode division multiplexing.
