France firm Pechiney SA is planning to set up a 700 million dollars Greenfield alumina project in Orissa. According to the chairman of Pechiney Jean-Pierre Rodier, the company has already sent an application to the Orissa government for bauxite mining rights as soon as they get government's permission, the company will start exploration work. The unit will be built and operated by Pechiney. Rodier also added that Pechiney is interested in picking up a state in Nalco as and when the government decides to put the public sector unit on the block. It is worth noting that a couple of years back, Pechiney has approached Nalco with a proposal to jointly develop a Greenfield alumina project. According to Rodier, Pechiney is still waiting for a reply from Nalco regarding that proposal. He did not rule out the possibility of integrating the operations of Nalco and the greenfield alumina project if Pechiney manages to get on the driving seat at Nalco.
