Introduction:We have focused on the effect of retained austenite on the variation of microstructure and mechanical properties of martensitic carbon steels with the low-temperature tempering treatment [1]. In the previous study, a unique hardening behavior during tempering at 673 K was discovered in the 10%Ni-added steel. This temper hardening behavior in the Ni-added steel would probably have a large influence on the toughness and ductility; nevertheless, few studies have been reported on the cause of this phenomenon and effect on the mechanical properties. In this study, both transmission electron microscopy study and Charpy impact testing were carried out to reveal the microstructural factor causing the temper hardening in the Ni-added steel and its effect on toughness.
