To extend the life of steel ladles in a duty cyclerequiring heavy use of ladle arc reheating and corrosive syntheticslags, WCI steel company investigated the application of sprayedrefractory linings as veneers over existing brick and as full workinglinings. A step-wise program was employed to ensure minimal risk atall times while assessing the factors that limit the ultimate life ofeach ladle.
