Skorpion Zinc project on track for first shipments early 2003

Global mining giant Anglo American is on track to make initial shipments of zinc from its 454 million dollars Skorpion mine and refinery project in southern Namibia during the early part of 2003, the company said.Anglo American said the facility will ramp up to its output capacity of 150,000 metric tons a year over a two year period, during which time 25 kilogram zinc ingots as well as 1,000 kg and 2,000 kg "jumbo" blocks will be produced. Some zinc is already being produced at the site, but only for training purposes to provide insight into the project plant's hydrometallurgical processes.
