This paper gives Kumpulan Guthrie's perspective on the care of replants (Malaysian Operations) with emphasis on the latest techniques, agronomic processes and its involvement towards personnel training and competency. The objective of care of replantsin contributing to future FFB yields and its sustainability is paramount to the profitability of the Company. Notwithstanding the normal practice in the industry, Guthrie has implemented additional measures in the care of replants such as the preparation of a replant blueprint map before commencement of the replant proper. During field preparation, the spreading of the shredded material over 3.6 in wide with the fronds placed below the shredded material; the levelling of harvesting paths of 2.4 m wideand large hole planting are being practiced. For maintenance, new areas of focus are water management through construction of conservation pits for both the undulating and terrace area. The importance of EFB application for the first four years; outsourcing of EFB and mechanising the application of EFB in order to reduce labour dependency has been adopted. In the case of pests management, regimented fortnightly spraying, monthly census, introduction of Turbomiser and usage of pheromone traps are fundamental for rhinoceros beetle control. Steps are also taken to manage bagworms by planting beneficial plants from the commencement of planting of palms. New innovations to ensure good replant standards include the introduction of replant ownership on the estate, introduction of model estates concept and encouragement of cross estates visits. Training of all levels of personnel through Competency Based Training and Education (CBTE) is in place whilst the adoption of good agricultural practices (based on theEUREPGAP Model) is being developed.
