© 2023 The AuthorsIn order for firms to implement the Circular Economy, and close all material and energy cycles, connections are needed not only within but also between multiple Industrial Ecosystems. To enable such complex interconnections, the European Union is preparing legislation to enforce the use of digital product passports (DPPs). These are verifiable collections of data about products’ composition, environmental footprint and opportunities for preventing waste. The notion of the DPP relies heavily on a suitable digital infrastructure, and it opens the possibility of using the power of artificial intelligence (AI), to optimize circular production within and between Industrial Ecosystems. The benefits of DPPs will only be attained if their design, knowledge engineering, and implementation is well-orchestrated. The purpose of this paper is to develop a set of guiding principles for the orchestration of DPPs, based upon a trans-disciplinary analysis, that form a theoretical basis upon which future research can build.

Beyond the glass ceiling: Informal gender-based status hierarchy and corporate misconduct

© 2023 Elsevier Inc.We use status characteristics theory to hypothesize that status beliefs lead to the formation of an informal gender-based status hierarchy on corporate boards. After controlling for several characteristics of directors, we discover that the status ranking of female directors is remarkably 19.58% of one position lower than that of male directors on boards. We investigate how female director status ranking affects board decisions, particularly corporate ethical behaviors. We specifically argue that female director status ranking is negatively associated with corporate misconduct, such that the likelihood of misconduct is lower when female gender status is positively viewed on boards. Furthermore, we argue that the effect of informal female director status ranking is contingent on three factors: the presence of a female board chair, good governance mechanisms, and Confucian culture. Using a large firm–year (18,266) and director–year (285,229) sample of Chinese firms during 2008–2019, we find support for our theoretical predictions.

© 2023 The Author(s)This paper analyzes the effect of local institutions and market orientation on the export performance of Latin American firms when they implement generic competitive strategies. A specific questionnaire sent to 201 executives of exporting manufacturing and service companies in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Peru generates the data for this research. Then, confirmatory factor analysis is used to develop the underlying multi-item constructs, and a structural equation model tests the hypotheses. The results state that local institutions, directly and indirectly, affect export performance through the marketing orientation of firms, and marketing orientation mediates the implementation of the differentiation strategy but not the cost-based leadership strategy. The findings suggest that firms with differentiation strategies benefit more from strong local institutions.

Price-ethicality association: When price discounts inhibit ethical purchasing

© 2023 Elsevier Inc.The authors demonstrate that consumers form a robust association between price and ethicality, separate from the traditional price-quality association, which significantly influences their ethical purchase decisions. Grounded in compensatory inference theory and signaling theory, six studies reveal that when consumers encounter ethical products offered at discount prices, they perceive that the products cannot be genuinely ethical and avoid purchasing them. The adverse effect of discount prices on ethical consumption is explained by lower product ethicality perceptions and is prevalent among those who are more ethically minded. The final study shows that marketers can overcome the negative effects by including communications assuring consumers that the products are legitimately ethical, despite price discounts.

© 2023 Elsevier Inc.Two-sided B2B electronic markets involve a market-maker platform firm that coordinates transactions between the buyer and seller sides of the online marketplace. This paper examines certain formal (monitoring) and informal (procedural fairness) governance processes that platform firms can leverage to manage platform participants. We hypothesize the impact of these processes on sellers’ performance vis-a-vis the platform's buyers. We also incorporate the platform firm's structural attributes (self-participation and investments) as moderators of the relationship between platform governance and seller performance. We find that both monitoring and procedural fairness increase seller performance individually. However, the two moderators present opposite interaction patterns: self-participation promotes the performance properties of fairness, but undermines that of monitoring, while investments exhibit an exactly opposite effect. For platform managers, our findings suggest two “choice-packages” comprising different process-structure constellations for enhancing the performance of platform participants.

An exploration of ripple effects of advertising among major suppliers in a supply chain network

© 2023 Elsevier Inc.In this research, we explore a new phenomenon where advertising expenditure is found to oscillate between supply partners of a supply chain network (SCN) in a predictable manner. We refer to this oscillation as the ripple effect of advertising in supply chain networks. These oscillations are similar to the bullwhip and reverse bullwhip effects and are expected to impose similar operational inefficiencies in supply networks. Using the ripple effects and bullwhip effects literature as its underlying theoretical foundation, this paper uses longitudinal data from the apparel industry to analyze the advertising differences among the major suppliers of a supply chain (SC) system holistically using a bilinear mixed model. The results support the presence of the ripple effect of advertising and suggest that advertising should be better coordinated across supply chain members to reduce operational and financial inefficiencies.

© 2023Online word-of-mouth (WOM) has attracted considerable attention from researchers due to its abundant information on customer perceptions that drive product and service improvement. This study develops a novel weighted service quality (WSQ) metric derived from online customer opinions, leveraging the importance-performance analysis framework. Data collected from social and non-social online platforms confirms that this WSQ approach outperforms the widely used average sentiment score approach and significantly predicts the industry service quality standard, Airline Quality Rating (AQR). In addition, the WSQ metric derived from social media proves to be a more vital indicator for AQR than that derived from a non-social online platform. A significant difference in topic distributions was also identified between consumer opinions from social media and non-social online platforms. Our study makes several crucial contributions to the service quality literature on employing online WOM using sentiment analysis and topic modeling techniques.

© 2023 Elsevier Inc.Board attributes interrelate with one another and the environment in which they are embedded in forming corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance, resulting in configurations of board attributes. By embracing a configurational approach, this study aims to investigate how the CSR-committee as a board structure interacts within different configurations of director characteristics (female-directors, director's age, tenure, and experience) and other board structures (non-executive directors, CEO-duality, board-size) in shaping CSR-performance. The results of a fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) of 789 FTSE350 and S&P500 listed companies during a 4-year period (2013–2016) reveals nine board configurations leading to high CSR-performance, six containing the CSR-committee. Three board archetypes were identified. Their formation is shaped on main differences seen amongst them, leading to distinct archetypes: committee-boards, experience-boards, and hybrid-boards. The result of the configurational approach agrees with the argument “one-size” does not fit all, and different boards can achieve the same results via unique configurations.

© 2023 Elsevier Inc.This study investigates the impact of Diagnosis-Related-Group (DRG) on medical expenses and medical service quality in Chinese public hospitals. We also examine how the effects of DRG vary among different hospital classifications. Using a unique dataset of hospitalization settlement and discharge information at the patient level, we apply a fixed-effects difference-in-differences (DID) model to assess the causal effects. Our research uncovers interesting findings on how public hospitals react to cost controls and quality improvement during the initial stages of DRG implementation. Our results reveal that DRG significantly reduces various medical costs but does not significantly affect the quality of care. Furthermore, we observe that DRG increases the burden on patients in Grade III hospitals and has a substantial negative impact on medical service quality, which contradicts the intended goals of the DRG payment reform. Our study provides insights from the hospital perspective and can serve as a reference for medical insurance payment reform in developing countries that are undergoing primary healthcare reform.

© 2023 The AuthorsConsumer scepticism has attracted increasing scholarly attention in recent years. However, the scientific understanding of the development and consequences of consumer scepticism towards corporate social responsibility (CSR) and related programmes remains fragmented. In response, this paper reviews, synthesises and assesses the CSR-related scepticism literature from more than two decades (1998–2021) within the antecedents–consequences framework. In this paper, 89 studies in the existing literature are synthesised and critically evaluated, and the problems and gaps in the literature are highlighted. This paper also presents an attempt to develop an integrative framework to provide a comprehensive understanding of the antecedents and consequences of CSR-related scepticism. Finally, it offers future research directions based on the current knowledge and gaps in the extant literature.
