Dear Readers, After six years, we are pleased to present the third special issue on the Carbon2Chem~R joint research project. Once again, the project has made enormous progress over the past two years. The current environment, marked by the war in Ukraine and extreme climate-related events, is an additional driving force for the consortium. What was once conviction is now certainty: Carbon2Chem~R represents a key building block for climate protection and for safeguarding a sustainable supply of raw materials.

The Carbon2Chem~R Laboratory in Oberhausen-A Workplace for Lab-Scale Setups within the Cross-Industrial Project

Within the Carbon2Chem~R network, basic research is mandatory for a successful implementation and realization of sustainable technologies for CO2 emission reduction. For this purpose, the exchange of knowledge between the project partners in the individual subareas is as essential as obtaining precise data on the fundamental parameters on a laboratory scale in order to transfer them later to large-scale plants. Therefore, the Carbon2Chem~R laboratory offers a platform to gain detailed insights into the individual sub-processes and to then apply these findings at the technical center in Duisburg.

Bridging the Analytical Gap Between Gas Treatment and Reactor Plants in Carbon2Chem~R

Herein, the analytical infrastructure for the measurements of the cleaned gases is presented. An overview of all sampling points for the off- and on-line analysis is given. The detailed decryption of the composition of the cleaned blast furnace gas, its main components as well as its traces are presented. Thereby, over 99 % of the overall signal strength of this complex gas matrix measured with a proton transfer reaction mass spectrometer with H3O~+ as reagent ion could be revealed. Furthermore, by the example of the catalyst poison H2S, the necessity of monitoring continuously the gas matrix for certain compounds was proven.

Ammonia Decomposition in the Process Chain for a Renewable Hydrogen Supply

This review article deals with the challenge to identify catalyst materials from literature studies for the ammonia decomposition reaction with potential for application in large-scale industrial processes. On the one hand, the requirements on the catalyst are quite demanding. Of central importance are the conditions for the primary reaction that have to be met by the catalyst. Likewise, the catalytic performance, i.e., an ideally quantitative conversion, and a high lifetime are critical as well as the consideration of requirements on the product properties in terms of pressure or by-products for potential follow-up processes, in this case synthesis gas applications. On the other hand, the evaluation of the multitude of literature studies poses difficulties due to significant varieties in catalytic testing protocols.

Within the Carbon2Chem~R collaborative research project, mathematical models are used to simulate operational scenarios of cross-industrial networks, particularly chemical plants implemented in a steel mill environment. In this context the distributed co-simulation is used, which enables the independent development of the constituent subsystems. The underlying waveform relaxation algorithm is examined and evaluated with regard to its stability and convergence characteristics when calculating the solution in comparison to the monolithic modeling approach.

A Gas Generating System for Complex Gas Mixtures-Multifunctional Application in PTR Method Optimization and Downstream Methanol Synthesis

The multifunctional applicability of a gas mixing system is presented within the scope of Carbon2Chem~R for the simulation of steel mill flue gases and their application in downstream processes. A special focus is set on the parallel operation of the gas mixing system to enable PTR-MS method optimization and methanol synthesis with simulated real gas matrices. Information is gathered for the design of downstream processes and their application, where methanol synthesis is chosen as a model reaction. A proof-of-principle study is presented where operation of a catalytic reactor setup in combination with the gas mixing system and a compressor generate reproducible results. The addition of potential trace components in methanol synthesis is exemplarily demonstrated using ammonia. With respect to the PTR-MS application, the dosing of two calibration gas standards, toluene and carbonyl sulfide, via the gas mixing system were analyzed in detail. The obtained results give insight into its applicability to simulate traces and enables the further development of analytical methods for the analysis of trace impurities in the ppb and ppt range in complex gas mixtures.
