Their structures were elucidated through extensive ID and 2D NMR and HR-ESI-MS spectroscopic analyses. All known compounds were isolated from the genus Glycosmis for the first time. Furthermore, the antiproliferative activities of all isolated alkaloids in vitro were evaluated. Compound 2 displayed weak antiproliferative activities against five human cancer cell lines, HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7, and SW480.

The structures of the target compounds were confirmed by 'H, 13C NMR, and HR-MS. A preliminary bioassay showed that most of them displayed potent bioactivities. In particular, compound 5a displayed significant activity and might be a potential novel lead compound for further development of antifungal agent.

The structures of these compounds were elucidated based on their spectroscopic data. Compound 1 showed significant activities against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC25923) and Bacillus subtilis (ATCC6633) with MIC value of 3.1 u.g/mL, whereas 2 exhibited selective antibacterial activity against B. subtilis.

Undaria pinnatifida, Costaria costata, Sargassum miyabeiYendo [1].

The whole herb of H. caudatifolia, a folk medicine, was traditionally used to treat asthma, chronic bronchitis, inflamed eye, children's malnutritional stagnation, bleeding in trauma, children's fever, sore throat, and diarrhea by the Yao nationalities in China [2]. The characteristic chemical constituents of this genus are alkaloids, anthraquinones, flavonoids, iridoids, steroids, and triterpenoids [3-10]. Few reports on the chemical compositions of H. caudatifolia can be found in the literature [11, 12]. As part of our continuing investigations on bioactive constituents from traditional Chinese medicinal plants, a systematic phytochemical study of H. caudatifolia carried out in our lab led to the isolation of seven anthraquinones and five coumarins.

In many parts of the world, sea fennel is used as a food ingredient for several traditional recipes. It is especially known for its good sensory traits due to its high essential oils content [2]. In the past, sea fennel was used in folk medicine to prevent scurvy and for vermifuge and diuretic effects [1]. Today, sea fennel enjoys a good reputation as a traditional remedy in some Mediterranean regions. For example, in Spain, pickled leaves are eaten as a digestive and for its antiscorbutic and diuretic properties.

These compounds may interact with other biological systems representing targets suitable for the development of novel natural products for the pharmaceutical potential. Living in a special ecoenvironment, the endophytic fungus seems to be especially fruitful producers of biologically active secondary constituents with which they probably regulate their interactions with their hosts [6-9]. Recently, endophytic microorganisms have been recognized as being in a very particular ecological niche and having huge chemical diversity [10, 11] as a consequence of their biological and biochemical evolution. Therefore, these microorganisms play an important role in natural product discovery [12-20]. During our continuing investigation on potentially bioactive metabolites from plant endophytes, we investigated the constituents of an endophytic fungus, Phialophora lagerbergii (Eurotiomycetes), isolated from the Taiwanese endemic plant Ardisia cornudentata var. cornudentata. In the course of screening for biological secondary metabolites from Formosan entophyte fungi, P. lagerbergii was chosen for further investigation. Little attention has been paid to the chemical constituents of this fungus, which is being investigated and published for the first time. In this study, six compounds 1-6 were separated and purified by chromatographic methods, and their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. All the compounds were isolated from Eurotiomycetes for the first time.
