The company's foray into zinc is relatively new: in 2001 Xstrata acquired the zinc operations of Asturiana de Zinc SA, with its assets located in northern Spain. The operations comprise the San Juan de Nieva zinc smelter and the Arnao zinc semis plant in Asturia, and the Reocin zinc mine and Hinojedo roasting plant in Cantabria.

CVRD, as the company is known, said the mine has reserves of 5 million tons and is located in northern Minas Gerais, a state in Brazil's southeast. CVRD researchers found the mine while looking for copper in a gold mine which was shut down last year.

The net sales of the company stood at Rs 371 million compared to Rs 233 million for the same period. The company's interest burden was lower at Rs 0.74 million (Rs 7.4 lakh), down from Rs 1 million (Rs 10.5 lakh) during the period. The depreciation during the quarter stood at Rs 27.5 million (19.5 million).

The silver fabrication demand should pick up as economies around the world start to pick up, according to the World Silver Survey conducted by the Washington-based Silver Institute. The current rebound in the growth of the global gross domestic product (GDP) is already leading to higher demand for a wide range of silver-containing products. A major boost for demand will be from the health of the electronic industry, in particular, over the rest of the year the institute says. Asia currently accounts for most of the global gains, with Indian offtake growing particularly strongly-up nearly 22 per cent.
