Cabinet Committee on Disinvestment had earlier cleared disinvestment of 30 per cent stake in the aluminium major through ADR/GDR issue along with domestic float. However, it had left open the percentage of stake to be offered through various routes. ADR issue is being favoured because the department felt that the company can withstand the pressure of gong for the issue.

According to the chairman of Pechiney Jean-Pierre Rodier, the company has already sent an application to the Orissa government for bauxite mining rights as soon as they get government's permission, the company will start exploration work. The unit will be built and operated by Pechiney. Rodier also added that Pechiney is interested in picking up a state in Nalco as and when the government decides to put the public sector unit on the block. It is worth noting that a couple of years back, Pechiney has approached Nalco with a proposal to jointly develop a Greenfield alumina project. According to Rodier, Pechiney is still waiting for a reply from Nalco regarding that proposal. He did not rule out the possibility of integrating the operations of Nalco and the greenfield alumina project if Pechiney manages to get on the driving seat at Nalco.

"Certainly Asia is a natural market" and the company would like to think the majority of Comalco output goes into its natural market, Walsh said. Nickel metal has the highest purity, and doesn't include ferro nickel. Imports in 2001 were down 50 percent from 57,859 tons in 2000 due to Japan's recession.Japan is the world's biggest nickel user. Weak demand in Japan and other countries pulled the London Metal Exchange benchmark nickel contract down to a 33- month low of dollar 4,290/ton in early November.
