    Alcoa to curtail capacity, take 15-20M dollars charge in Q3

The world's largest aluminium maker said it would close an already idled plant in Oregon and on in Texas. A North Carolina plant that had been operating at 75 percent capacity will be idled.

    查看更多>>摘要:Russia's aluminium smelters produced 1.65 million metric tons of primary aluminium in January-June, up 1.5 percent on the year, a government official said. In 2001, Russian aluminium output rose 1.7 percent on the year to 3.299 million tons on the heel of a 3.2 percent rise during 2000. The official said the aluminium sector was maintaining a stable pace of growth, with 2002 output growth unlikely to exceed 2 percent. All smelters increased output during the period with the highest rise of 7.3 percent registered by Bogoslovsk, owned by Russia's second biggest aluminium producer Siberian-Ural Aluminium Co. Russia's aluminium industry remained export-orientated, as domestic consumption remained small. However, some increase in domestic consumption was registered last year, the official said. According to the State Customs Committee, Russia's aluminium exports exceeded 1.2 million tons in January-May, down 5.3 percent on the year.

Net sales edged down to Rs 7.23 billion (Rs 723.64 crore) from Rs 7.26 billion (Rs 726.53 crore) and other income fell to Rs 0.38 billion (Rs 3.74 crore) from Rs 0.6 billion (Rs 6.25 crore). Exports during the quarter stood at Rs 0.9 billion (Rs 90 crore). Copper sales rose to 39,946 tons, up by 23 per cent from the year-ago period. Interest cost rose to Rs 0.38 billion (Rs 37.73 crore) from Rs 0.13 billion (Rs 13.71 crore). Cash profit was at Rs 0.63 billion (Rs 63.32 crore) from Rs 0.46 billion (Rs 46.44 crore).

    HCL revival plan sanctioned

The plan includes conversion of the company's non-plan loan of Rs 4.4 billion for VRS into grant-in-aid, translation of outstanding plan loan amounting to Rs 715 million into equity, waiver of outstanding interest on plan loan amounting to Rs 257.2 million, putting aside of the outstanding guarantee fee of Rs 67.5 million and sanctioning of an additional equity to keep the net worth positive. The Government has planned to provide an additional amount of Rs 1.3 billion as a grant to meet the expenses of separating about 3,000 more employees so as to bring down its manpower to the level of 6,000 from 9,161 as on date, according to a company release.

Production of nickel in matte in the first half of 2002 was 31,400 tons compared with 30,900 tons in the prior-year period. "Second-quarter production was effectively flat year-over-year and slightly less than plan due primarily to lower nickel ore grades. Consequently, we expect to produce 130 million pounds of nickel in matte in 2002, below our original objective," said Edward W. Hodkin, president and chief executive, in a press release. The company's realized price for nickel in matte averaged 5,244 dollar per ton in the second quarter of 2002, compared with 5,139 per dollars ton in the second quarter of 2001.

"I don't think prices will bounce back to 4,500 US dollars/ton. There's more room for producers to cut output, or else tin prices could drop below 3,900 US dollars/ton," the source said. Current tin prices are below the production costs of most tin producers, he said.

    Indonesia Ministry: No plans to halt tin ore export ban

"Two days ago we met with tin players on the Bangka Island to evaluate the situation after the tin ban. That meeting might have been misinterpreted," said Ferry Yahya, director of Exports for Agriculture and Mining Products. "So far there is no intention to lift the ban," Ferry added. On June 1, Indonesia imposed a ban on the export of tin ore in an effort to reduce oversupply from Indonesia which has pressured world tin prices.
