    NEW CHALLENGES IN WATER TREATMENT

    Richard P Benoit

查看更多>>摘要:The steel industry faces many challenges in water treatment. New technologies are now available that address these challenges with particular emphasis on monitoring control and yield improvements. The beginning of the twenty-first century has brought with it a new set of challenges for the steel industry. Low prices, high energy costs and an economic recession are affecting North American producers, while mega-mergers, export embargoes and the impact of world trade nave the European and Asian steelmakers in a serious state of flux. Pressure to improve production and lower operating costs is forcing managers to wring efficiencies Out of every one of their processes. Water costs appear early in the review process as a commodity that can significantly impact the total cost of manufacturing a product.

THE REVOLUTIONARY NEW LONG-PRODUCT MANUFACTURING PROCESS

查看更多>>摘要:A new era in steel production has begun with the arrival of an innovative, new endless casting rolling process offering uninterrupted production of in-line treated commercial and speciality steels. The Danieli endless casting rolling process (ECR~R) is the latest innovation in mini-mills for speciality steel and commercial steel long products, enabling uninterrupted production from liquid steel to the complete finished product, including in-line heat treatments and inspection procedures in a single, endless process. It is the natural evolution of the 'black box' mini-mill technology, the direct casting and rolling process developed by Danieli back in the late 1980s.

TOUGH CUSTOMER: THE NEW ROLL NECK BEARING

Four row sealed tapered roller bearings are used primarily to support rolls in the rolling mule of steelworks. They are now required to achieve longer life under the adverse conditions of high loading and extreme shook loads, and also deal with the problem of water and scale ingress, which, because of its effect on lubricating conditions, probably affects bearing life the most NSK has dedicated substantial resources to this problem, and has now developed Extra-Capacity Sealed-Clean~(TM) roll neck bearings. The new extra capacity design delivers up to 34 per cent extra load capacity, higher reliability, longer life under severe lubrication conditions and easier handling.

STATE-OF-THE-ART SOLUTIONS FOR THE STEEL INDUSTRY

Generally speaking, operating conditions in the steel industry are very demanding, with heavy loads high temperatures and large amounts of cooling water being typical. It is essential that these issues are considered when attempting to maximise machine uptime and productivity. For decades SKF has developed and supplied components such as rolling bearings, plain bearings, seals and lubricants to the steel industry and contributed to the trouble-free operation of steel mills. Based on this experience, SKF has developed solutions for continuous casters and rolling mills that contribute to higher productivity and lower operating costs.

ELECTRON-BEAM TEXTURING: FOR A SUPERIOR SURFACE

查看更多>>摘要:Advanced, versatile texturing technology for rolls in cold rolling mill applications is producing excellent results. Today's steel end-users (the automotive, building, packaging and household appliance industries) and steel producers require better surfaces for steel sheet then ever before, whether for purely aesthetic reasons - when t is to be painted - or for better production conditions in rolling, galvanising and forming. The development of electron beam texturing (EBT) represents a technological leap forward from the previously used method of electric discharge texturing (EDT). The craters in a single unit of an EBT texture can vary in depth and diameter (see picture). The roughness (Ra) and peak count can be varied independently of one another so that, even when formability is required, an excellent painting result can be achieved.

THE MATERIAL HANDLING INDUSTRY: NEW RELEVANCE FOR A NEW ECONOMY

查看更多>>摘要:Having been written off in recent times; the material handling and logistics industry has proved its detractors wrong. But much still needs to be done to make the industry a vital part of the business future. As we enter the new millennium, US consumption of material handling and logistics technologies and services is rapidly approaching 100bn US dollars per year This fact is especially remarkable when we consider that the demise of the US material handing industry was predicted as recently as 20 years ago. To the surprise and delight of many, the industry has shown growth figures year after year that have outstripped growth in the general economy. In this article, I will share some views on the origin of this extraordinary growth and mention some factors that I believe will continue to fuel average growth above that in the general economy in the first decade of the new millennium.

CLASSY MOVER: THE HEAVY-DUTY ELEVATING TRANSPORTER

查看更多>>摘要:A Canadian company with a tradition of innovation today manufactures: the most sophisticated and reliable heavy-duty transporter in the steel industry The Paling Continuous Transport System (CTS) is the most advanced mechanically driven elevating transporter in the world. It has been designee with high duty cycle harsh environments and low maintenance requirements in mind. Wherever heavy load handling is required wherever flexibility, speed and economy are required, Palings CTS has the answer. No mode of heavy materials transport offers such versatility mobility, safety and cost-efficiency as the pallet drop-off concept. Vehicle idle and driver waiting time is eliminated, a significant accomplishment, considering the delays and bottlenecks in a busy plant. Proper deployment of CTS can transform a whole fleet of pallets into a fleet of trucks that are virtually maintenance free compared to conventional trucks.

    ADVANCED CONTROL FOR HOT-STRIP MILLS

查看更多>>摘要:Sophisticated new control design methods now enable the creation of new control systems for hot-strip finishing mills, improving product quality and ensuring excellent economic performance. The benefits of integrated advanced control design may be summarised as:A completely global control design strategy eliminates the ad-hoc assembly of hot-strip mill controllers. It subsumes the existing actuator level control Strategy (classical or advanced). It incorporates, in a natural way, practical constraints across all stands of the finishing mill. This includes hard constraints, such as actuator saturation, ace soft constraints, such as rolling load.It allows global trade-offs between variables across all mill stands. It is capable of decentralisation ace can be made computationally efficient and therefore practically feasible.Advanced control design methods have the potential to create a new control design paradigm for not-Strip finishing mills, providing improved quality whilst optimizing economic performance.

PC-BASED CONTROL SYSTEM DELIVERS ROLLING MILL MASTERY

Detailed information about the steel production process requires the continuous availability of consistent operating data. Because this is no longer possible using conventional control technology Buderus in Wetzlar, Germany, decided to use a Soft PLC based on a PC for the modernisation of a rolling mill. The control concept developed by lbs released a range of ratio-nalisation potential and immediately achieved improvements in the rolling technology.

    OPEN-LOOP CONTROL IN REAL TIME

查看更多>>摘要:The ibaLogic Soft PLC graphical control system is designed to run on Windows NT 4.0. Without using NMIs and real-time extensions, it ensures determinism up to 1ms and 25kHz per channel. The concept is based on the runtime environment in which the control monitors which processor in a multiprocessor system executes a given process. This uncouples the actual computing process from graphical and network tasks. The number of possible tasks is not limited. An individual cycle time can be assigned to each task. Within an application, the concept allows the tasks of several conventional PLCs to be combined as a Soft PLC. This permits a high-end PC to easily perform concurrently the tasks of several hardware PLCs, reducing of the time needed for cross-communication between them which often causes a bottleneck. In this case, off-task connectors perform the task-task communication. They also serve as a bi-directional communication interface to the OPC client.
