The association however said it is too early to predict whether sales will rebound soon. "We need at least a few months more to see the real trend," the association spokesman said. According to the association's June report, sales of copper cable and wire products are estimated to have fallen around 4 percent on year to a preliminary 61,800 tons in May.

Ltd. targets to produce 24,000 metric tons of tin this year-its normal yearly output target-following a production cutback last year, the company's spokesman said. "Last year was an exception because tin prices were very low. This year we plan to produce 24,000 tons as usual," the spokesman told. In June and July of 2001, Yunnan Tin reduced output by a combined 3,500 tons, which resulted in last year's total output of 20,500 tons.

A conciliator has been appointed to contact all relevant parties. "The facility is still producing at well below 50 percent of capacity, and no meetings have been arranged, with it a public holiday in Quebec Monday," the spokesman said. Noranda declared force majeure on copper concentrates from the Horne smelter late.

According to figures released by the company, the net profit however came down to Rs 182 million from Rs 205.3 million in the 2000-01 fiscal mainly on account of providing for deferred tax of Rs 45.4 million The board of directors has recommended a dividend of 35 per cent, same as that of the previous year. Commenting on the results, Ramachandra N Galla, chairman and managing director of the company said that it was significant that in a year beset with challenges, the company managed to buck the trend and register a 21 per cent growth.

BHP Billiton now plans to shut Pering at the end of 2002 because of a poor zinc market, compared with previous plans to keep it operating through to early 2004. Market observers said a successful breach of the 790-800 dollars/ton resistance level is required in order for fresh upside momentum, although this looks unsustainable in the absence of further production cuts.
