Cost inflation tarnishes good news of strong metal prices

    WILL CLARKE

Sharp drops have been seen across many equity markets, with the Dow Jones on its worst streak since early in the COVID-19 pandemic. The S&P/TSX Global Mining Index is, at time of writing, down by 18% over the past month, albeit from the 14-year highs in April. The war in Ukraine continues to add political risk, COVID is ripping through an under-vaccinated Chinese population, logistical snarls in global shipping are worsening, but the real spectre is that of inflation.

查看更多>>摘要:Australia has always been hard pushed to add value to its mineral products. An apparently imminent change in government will face the same obstacles. Australian Labor Party (ALP) trade and resources spokeswoman Madeleine King outlined a "transformative economic agenda" last week to an audience hosted by the Perth USAsia Centre at the University of Western Australia. King is slated to be a senior minister in an Australian government after a national election on May 21. Polls show the current opposition party (the ALP) led by Anthony Albanese winning convincingly.

Save the chuditch or save the planet

As with many of its fury friends, the cat-sized chuditch, also known as the western quoll, looks unbearably cute with its spotted coat, long tail, and batlike ears.

The unique selling point of Anglo American

查看更多>>摘要:A seismic event looms for Anglo American: its first production at the giant Quellaveco copper mine in Peru expected in June. When that happens, the ghosts of Anglo's yesteryear can be laid to rest -in particular, the pain of having to write off billions after it acguired Brazilian iron ore producer Minas Rio at the top of the last cycle. But there are bigger things here. First-production at Quellaveco will be an important moment for the entire global mining industry, not just Anglo, and for a host of reasons.

Orford eyes massive nickel sulphides at West Raglan

查看更多>>摘要:With hype around battery metals exploration at an all-time high, Toronto-listed junior Orford Mining could be set to fly as it progresses a nickel exploration project in Canada - with a little help from Andrew Twiggy' Forrest. The project in guestion is West Raglan, an advanced stage nickel-cop-per-PGE exploration asset 90km down the road from Glencore's Raglan nickel mine, one of the lowest-cost nickel producing assets in the world.

Canada's global potash and uranium supply potential has dominated the headlines since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as countries - including the US - look to Ottawa to make up for sanctioned supplies from Russia and Belarus.

This new pad, situated approximately 200m west of the Kay deposit, will allow tor testing of the Central target "which was previously defined based on coincident structural, geochemical, and geophysical anomalies".

    McEwen's decennium horribilis continues

查看更多>>摘要:Far from an annus horriblis, the 2020's are becoming a decennium horribilis for mining entrepreneur Robert McEwen as a litany of woes continues, threating the company's coveted NYSE listing and turning his plan of building the biggest gold miner on the NYSE a pipedream. The bad news continued with the company's results for the quarter to March 31, which showed production plummeted 37.5% to 25,100 gold-equivalent ounces at an all-in sustaining cost of $2,146 per ounce, from 40,150oz in the December 2021 quarter.

US Senator Martin Heinrich, a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, has introduced the Clean Energy Minerals Reform Act.

Tesla diversifies battery metals supply and sees demand growth

查看更多>>摘要:Carmaker Tesla is diversifying its direct supply of key battery metals, which are cobalt, lithium and nickel, and predicts strong demand for these critical minerals. Tesla owner Elon Musk, who has previously speculated about buying his own mines because of high lithium prices, now has a dozen direct supply contracts in place for Tesla for the three key battery metals. These are sourced from countries including China, Australia, Canada, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and the South Pacific territory of New Caledonia.
